Written over 50 years ago by the fu ture Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell\, at the behest of the US Chamber of Commerce\, the 6-page memo\, a free-market utopian treatise\, called fo r a money fueled big business makeover of government through corporate con trol of the media\, academia\, the pulpit\, arts and sciences and destruct ion of organized labor and consumer protection groups. But Powell’s real “ end game” was business control of law and politics.
\nHEIST’s step by step detail exposes the systemic implementation of Powell’s mem o by BOTH U.S. political parties culminating in the deregulation of indust ry\, outsourcing of jobs and regressive taxation. All of which led us to t he global financial crisis of 2008 and the continued dismantling of the Am erican middle class. Today\, politics is the playground of the rich and po werful\, with no thought given to the hopes and dreams of ordinary America ns.

Kathleen Sebelius went against advice of friends by declaring her candidacy in 1994 for Kansas i nsurance commissioner\, a statewide political office controlled exclusivel y by Republicans for a century.
\nShe committed to a campaign-closin g ad that brushed against the line in her race against Republican insuranc e commissioner Ron Todd\, who had the advantage of incumbency but the misf ortune of following in the footsteps of Fletcher Bell. Bell had the job fr om 1971 to 1991 but created an opening for a reform-minded Democrat when n ews spread in 1993 that he had taken $94\,000 in compensation for allegedl y injuring his back while lifting a briefcase.
\n“I remember the adv ertising guy said\, ‘You need a killer ad\, but you can’t be seen as a kil ler\,” she said.
\nThe result was a devastating commercial that blen ded lyrics of “Your Cheatin’ Heart” with a collection of newspaper headlin es denouncing GOP corruption attributable to Bell and extended to Todd. Se belius didn’t say a word in the ad\, allowing images and text to do her ta lking. On election night\, she prevailed with 58% of the vote to Todd’s 41 %.
\nSebelius\, who went on to be elected governor and serve in the Cabinet of President Barack Obama\, is the subject of a new documentary\, “Red State/Blue Governor: Kansas’ Kathleen Sebelius.”

Time Magazine’s cover proclaimed “Justice At Last\,” and she received unanimous Senate app roval. Born in 1930 in El Paso\, Texas\, O’Connor grew up on a cattle ranc h in Arizona in an era when women were expected to become homemakers. Afte r graduating near the top of her class at Stanford Law School\, she could not convince a single law firm to interview her\, so she turned to volunte er work and public service. A Republican\, she served two terms in the Ari zona state senate\, then became a judge on the state court of appeals. Dur ing her 25 years on the Supreme Court\, O’Connor was the critical swing vo te on cases involving some of the 20th century’s most controversial issues \, including race\, gender and reproductive rights — and she was the tiebr eaker on Bush v. Gore. Forty years after her confirmation\, this biography recounts the life of a pioneering woman who both reflected and shaped an era.

\n \nWe’re now two years into our experiences with SARS-CoV2 here in Kansas and more specifi cally Cowley County. Who would have thought that after this long a time we would still be ‘in the trenches with spiking positive cases\, hospitaliza tions\, serious underlying conditions complicating matters and more deaths than we ever thought possible’. How can this be?
\nHelping us understand how we got to this place\, we’re happy to welcome Tom Langer\, MPA\, Administrator – Public Health O fficer\, City-Cowley County Health Department\, sharing what he’s learned over the last couple of years and what might yet be ahead.
\n\nKansans want teachers to teach the truth\, without interference from politicians in Topeka! We take pride in our ability to overcome inju stice to become a better nation. The legislature shouldn’t censor American history – even the hard parts. It is not the legislature’s role to set cu rriculum. Let’s see our students up for success in an increasingly diverse America! However\, the rights to own and farm didn’t occur until after the Civil War. The Freedman’s Bureau Act was established in 1865 to provide food\, m edical care and assistance\, which aided the freed slaves in resettling. p>\n
The plan for each freed slave to receive forty acres and a mule nev er did materialize. Instead\, the government decided to offer labor and fa rm operating services to the freed slaves. In other words sharecropping\, whereby the landowner allows the freed slave to farm his land\; in return for a share of the crop produced on the land\, minus the required room and board fee.
\nBlacks were not deterred\, and eventually saved enough to purchase their own farms and supplies. By the year 1900\, blacks owned or partly owned over 12 million acres of usable farmland in t he south. This increase in land ownership was partly due to the rise in co tton (which was produced mainly in the south). Although blacks overcame a significant milestone in being able to purchase land and supplies\, anothe r obstacle awaited\; the establishment of Jim Crow Laws. Jim Crow laws gav e white farmers and business owners the rights to charge additional intere st rates on loans given to sharecroppers and black farmers who needed farm and household supplies. Since black farmers had no “voice” in business af fairs\, the white land and business owners were allowed to sell or even cr edit their share of the crops for a much lower price.
\nThe farmer w ho does not control his land he works does not control his own destiny. Th e black farmer population has decreased dramatically over the years. To gi ve you an idea of the numbers\, 95 percent of black farmers are located in the south\, where they comprise only 6 percent of the total number of reg istered farmers.
\nThe black farmer over the years has endured discr imination with regard to race\, formal education\, lending practices from banks and agriculture agencies and in research and technology. The rate at which farm land ownership by blacks is declining is a major concern. Blac k farmers have in the past an uncertain future with the denial of loans an d government assistance.
\nTimes have changed some aspects of farming for B lack entrepreneurs\, however the old adage\, “It’s a long and hard row to hoe” still rings true.
\nPlease join us as we explore a variety of s hort videos tracing the trials and tribulations faced by the Black America n farmer over the decades. Our program is open to everyone\; invite your family and friends to come along.

\nWha t exactly does a state Supreme Court Justice do? Sometimes called the stat e’s “court of last resort\,” the seven-member Kansas Supreme Court hears c ases on petition for review from the Kansas Court of Appeals\, original ac tions\, and designated cases that can be appealed directly to it from dist rict courts. Justice Evelyn Wilson\, appointed by Governor Laura Kelly in 2019\, and retired Justice Carol Beier\, appointed by Gov. Kathleen Sebeli us in 2003\, offer a perspective on how Kansas’ judicial system works and its critical role in maintaining a lawful society in our state.
\nHere’s probably your only chance to ask the justi ces questions instead of the other way around!
\nJustice Evelyn Z. Wilson is a native of Smith Cente r\, Kansas. She received an undergraduate degree in business/ economics fr om Bethany College in Lindsborg\, Kansas\, and a law degree from Washburn University School of Law. Before her appointment to the court\, she was a district judge and then Chief Judge of the 3rd Judicial District\, Shawnee County. She was a private-practice lawyer for 19 years.
\nCarol Beier\, who retired from the Kansas Supreme Court in September 2020\, served as a Justice on the Supreme Cour t for 17 years\, and prior to that as a Judge on the Kansas Court of Appea ls for more than three years. The third woman to serve on the Kansas Supre me Court\, she was retained by voters four times. Beier was previously a t rial and appellate partner at Foulston Siefkin in Wichita and was a visiti ng assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Law.
\nThe program will be streaming li ve on the Women for Kansas Facebook page. For those unable to watch live\, the event will be recorded and uploaded to our Women for Kansas YouTube Channel for your viewing anytime.

\n\nCowley County W4K is proud to have Kim Groom as our speaker for our meeting.
\nKim is a 60 something Kansan who still believes in the promise of the United Sta tes of America. A military brat\, Kim cut her social justice teeth on the racial unrest of the 1960s. As an educator for the past 35 years\, she has striven to develop not only an understanding of\, but a deep appreciation for\, this crazy\, convoluted governmental system of which we are an esse ntial part. She\, her husband\, Justin\, and their 16-year-old grandson li ve north of Winfield on the farm that her husband’s family homesteaded in 1864. They have six children (including in-laws)\, seven and (not quite) ½ grandchildren\, plus a great-grandson that is the delight of their lives.
\nKim can be described as a compassionate warrior. Kim has a warm and caring heart but that should not be mistaken for someone who simply ‘accepts’ life as it presents itsel f. Her ability to care for others is why she stays informed about current events\, studies the issues and does not miss a chance to share her opinio ns with our elected officials. Kim truly understands ‘civic engagement’ an d is such a good example for all of us. Everyone is invited to attend our meeting to learn more about advocacy. Come listen to what Kim has to say a nd you will leave the meeting ready to act!
